As we mark International Women's Day 2023, Holts celebrates the power of women in the jewellery industry. The gender index shows that only 17% of active companies are female-led, Holts proudly stands out with 80% of its employees being women. This blog will discuss how a female-driven approach can transform this sector for the UK, hear directly from our managing director and marketing manager on their experience leading at Holts (all women of course!) and making an impact together.
Even though Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, however, the jewellery industry has a long history of being male-dominated. Nowadays, Hatton Garden, London's prestigious jewellery quarter has embraced this evolution and continues to pave the way into an exciting new era of gender diversity within its walls.
Alicja, Managing Director
"At our company, we believe that business is most successful when it creates relationships with clients and colleagues alike. That is why I have led my team to prioritise the importance of a female touch in our work - one that is full of understanding, empathy, and engagement.
With this as our mission, we strive to offer our clients a unique experience, one that goes beyond just purchasing jewellery. We are here for them every step of the way in creating their heirloom pieces - and when they come back year after year, we know we have done our job well. We are here to do more than just make jewellery; we are here to connect with each client through communication and understanding. And I believe women are especially great at this approach.
We understand that in order to accomplish our goals of providing an outstanding service, we must look after one another within the workplace. This attitude is reflected in the way we work together, by being respectful and kind to those around us.
This philosophy is something I hope will continue for many years to come. As a mother of a young woman, I want the world she grows up in to have equal opportunities for all genders. That is why I will continue to work hard to empower and inspire our female employees and make sure their voices are heard. Together, we can ensure that our company remains successful through collaboration and respect."
Melissa, Campaign Manager:
"As a female marketer who understands what today's female audiences are looking for, I am passionate about breaking traditional stereotypes within the jewellery sector. For instance, it is not uncommon to see websites and social campaigns which feature over-embellished designs aligned more typically to male aesthetics for example roses, red lipstick marks, pink bows etc. I believe the least Valentine's day gift that a woman wants is a pink heart shape crystal pendant. However, this no longer needs to be the norm. Also, I would like to shift the idea of jewellery being exclusively gifted by men even for an engagement ring, read more about 'Why more millennial women are buying their own engagement rings' here.
This year the International Women's Day 2023 campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity, so what does Embrace Equity means to Holts from my marketing point of view?
At Holts, we actively work towards a society where the voices and perspectives of all genders are equally represented. We strongly believe that when it comes to business and jewellery design, no one sex should be favoured or excluded. It is our goal to ensure that everyone can view our products through an unbiased lens - regardless of gender. We strive to make sure that the jewellery pieces we create are something our customers can truly fall in love with, regardless of gender. Male engagement rings? Absolutely! We think it's perfectly fashionable for both genders to flaunt the sparkle of love and commitment. Find Gender Neutral engagement ring designs here."
In conclusion, at Holts we strive to create an equitable working and shopping environment when it comes to our jewellery designs. We are proud to be leading the way in gender diversity, creating products that appeal to everyone regardless of gender or personal preference. By embracing equity within our business, we continue to challenge outdated stereotypes and promote a sense of togetherness and belonging.
